Blind writing

Last week in class we did an activity "Readers Workshop Contract" I did the activity Blind Writing.
     The assignment was:
Cover your screen with something (like maybe your daybook). Type into your
literacy narrative without at the words you type.

I covered my screen with my day book and typed a document in word...

I did not at all care for this assignment, I am constantely looking up at the screen while I
type. It was very hard to do the blind typing assignment.
When I looked back at my work I had misspelled words and typed sentances incorrectly.
I am the type of person that when I type it has to be perfect, and change it right away when it is wrong.

  1. I fully agree with you. When I am typing I spend more of my time worrying about what I am spelling wrong and all of my grammatical errors. When I did this assignment I realized that if I just type what I need to type and do all the grammatical stuff at the end I have a better paper because I spend more time doing actual writing.

  2. This has me thinking about how much we associate our writing with correctness.... I wonder what other qualities (other than correctness) might be useful to writers... What do y'all think?

  3. Hey Taylor! I find that I'm the same way. I never have look at what I'm typing on the keyboard because I have the screen to tell me if my flying fingers mess up. I didn't do this assignment but I didn't plan on it since I knew that I would mess up. Badly

  4. I tried the blind wrting assignment also, it was hard not to lift up my screen, knowing I was selling something wrong, or that I had left something out. I learned that spell check is a life saver if I cant see what im typing, or if I look away too long. Im a perfectionist too and if something isnt right I cant stand to look at it.

  5. I had the same thing happen to me, all the words were red and misspelled. It was interesting to see how I wrote, I think I was more focused on keeping the same train of thought. The one bad thing was that whenever I got sidetracked I never really knew were to pick back up with my writing. I am less worried about how perfect my sentences are though, I've just never really cared for English. I do really love this class though Lacy!

  6. Hey Taylor,
I agree with you that this was not one of my favorite assignments. I was dreading having to do something similar for the midterm as apart of our group part, but it wasn't nearly as bad that time.

  7. I liked the fact that we could just write whatever we wanted.I couldnt do it because I coulnt see what I was writing which made it seem like gibberish. I like to see what I'm typing so I can correct it.

  8. I am the same way when i type things. When i see that i misspell something, i am weird about it. I will erase the whole sentence and start over because i don't want to grad my mouse. This class has a lot of interesting assignments that really work to get your mind thinking.

  9. I believe in clean and legible writing aswell. That's why I didn't care for this assignment neither! But I'm guessing the point of it was to just let your mind flow, and have your hand just record.

  10. I know how you are, when I am doing art I am so much of a perfectionist and I worry about all the details that I don't like my art.
